SEADS Network | Conception & Creation #BiomoddBRG13

Ana Margarida Esteves, researcher from CEI-Iscte, will participate in the conception and creation of the project #BiomoddBRG13.

This participation is part of an invitation to the SEADS network, in which Ana Margarida Esteves collaborates, to produce #BiomoddBRG13 by Musea Bruge (the Bruges city museum network). The installation will be open to the public from 26 June to 29 August, and will be accompanied by a programme of poetry recitals, debates and lectures. In this framework, the CEI’s researcher is organising the lecture “As Above/So Below”, which will be broadcasted for free by livestreaming.

SEADS stands for Space Ecologies Art and Design. This collective brings together artists, scientists, engineers, and activists who conduct future-oriented experimentation, combined with critical reflection. They operate worldwide with participatory projects such as Biomodd.

Biomodd is a community art project that creates new relationships between nature and technology across different cultures around the world. In Biomodd, nature and technology are fused into hybrid interactive art installations. The core idea is the co-creation of experimental systems in which recycled computers and living ecosystems coexist and mutually reinforce one another. The recycled computers are connected into a network that runs a custom computer game. In this game, visitors, plants, and other organisms interact in endlessly varying ways. Biomodd is an ongoing series of temporary experiments. It is always being developed on site with local communities and aims to ignite critical conversations about our ideas on ecology, progress, and our technological future.

The Biomodd installation for the Saint John’s Hospital was created with more than 120 participants from Bruges and the SEADS network, in close collaboration with Musea Brugge. It was built out of construction materials that have been recycled from the numerous art exhibitions from the past 20 years. In this way, the installation bridges the rich historical past of the city with artistic visions about the future of our world.

Ana Margarida Esteves

Ana Margarida Esteves is a Research Fellow at the Center for International Studies of the University Institute of Lisbon, Iscte and Guest Assistant Professor of the Department of Political Economy of the same institution. She has a Ph.D. in Sociology from Brown University (Providence, RI, USA) where she was a Fulbright Fellow. Her research and teaching encompass the relations between the social and solidarity economy, the commons and the sustainability transition movements; synergies between nature, culture and technology; and the application of critical pedagogies, as well as strategies of non-formal education, to social mobilization and the promotion of participatory democracy. She is a founder and member of the International Editorial Committee of the journal "Interface: A journal for and about social movements" (www.interfacejournal.net). She is also a member the RC47: Social Classes and Social Movements of ISA - International Sociological Association and part of its editorial platform Open Movements / Open Democracy (https://www.opendemocracy.net/openmovements ). In 2020, Ana Margarida became a member of SEADS (Space Ecologies Art and Design), a transdisciplinary and cross-cultural collective of artists, scientists, engineers and activists that is actively engaged in deconstructing dominant paradigms about the future and develops alternative models through a combination of critical inquiry and hands-on experimentation.". Previous to joining CEI-IUL, Ana Margarida Esteves held teaching positions at Brown University, Universidade Federal Fluminense (Brazil), Tulane University (New Orleans, USA) and Sunway University (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). She is a Visiting Research Fellow at Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) and Scuola Normale Superiore (Florence, Italy).
