26 – 30 SEP | Summer School Global Challenges

Global Challenges is a policy-oriented Summer School on the current challenges that shape and reconfigure the architecture of the global system.

This is an initiative organised and promoted by CEI-Iscte, in partnership with IMVF and the Club of Lisbon.

Summary

The Global Challenges Summer School (visit the site) is a 20-hours course, from 26 to 30 September 2022, with 2 daily classes, from 18h00 to 20h00 and from 20h30 to 22h30. It works as an optional course for Iscte’s master students, but it is also open as a summer school, or specialization seminar.

Coordination

Academic coordinator: Ana Mónica Fonseca, director of the Master’s in Modern and Contemporary History, director of the CEI-Iscte, the Center for International Studies of Iscte – Lisbon University Institute and Fernando Jorge Cardoso (representing IMVF and Club of Lisbon).

Executive coordinator: Inês Marques Ribeiro, integrated researcher at CEI-Iscte.

Academic Coordinator. Assistant Professor at the Department of History of Iscte, director of the Master’s in Modern and Contemporary History, deputy director of the Master’s in International Studies, Director of the Centre for International Studies, CEI-Iscte.

Academic Coordinator (on behalf of the partners). Head of Strategic and Development Studies at the Instituto Marquês de Valle Flôr, IMVF, Executive Director of the Club of Lisbon, Full Professor at Lisbon Autónoma University, Researcher at CEI-Iscte.

AGOSTINHO PEREIRA MIRANDA

Founder and Partner of Miranda & Associados and first Chairman (2001-2015). His major practice is in the fields of Energy Law and Arbitrage Law – he has been a Member of the Panel of Judges & Mediators on Investment of the World Bank since 2011.

 

                              ANA ISABEL XAVIER

Associate Professor at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and deputy director of OBSERVARE. Invited Professor at the Department of History at Iscte and Associate Researcher at CEI-Iscte. Previously: Deputy Director General of National Defense Policy (2015-2017) at the Ministry of Defense.

 

 

BRUNO CARDOSO REIS

Assistant Professor at Iscte and Integrated Researcher at CEI-Iscte. He is Adviser at the Institute of National Defense (IDN) and Associate Researcher at the Michael Howard Center for Military History at King’s College. Previously: Adviser to the Portuguese Minister of Defense.

 

CARLOS BRANCO 

Major General of the Portuguese Army (reserve), he served in several missions for the UN and NATO, including during the Balkans and Afghanistan wars. Deputy Director (2008) of the National Defence Institute and Deputy Director of the War College. 

 

CATARINA ROSETA PALMA 

Assistant Professor at Iscte. Integrated Researcher at BRU-Iscte – Business Research Unit (IBS) – Economics Group. Her main research interests and activities are related with environmental and natural resource economics, mainly water management, behavioural models, uncertainty, and growth.

 

CÁTIA MIRIAM COSTA 

Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Economy of Iscte, Integrated Researcher at the Centre for International Studies, CEI-Iscte. Specialised in intercultural relations, she has studied deeply non-European territories, including China. 

 

FRANCISCO LEANDRO 

Associate Professor at the City University of Macau. Deputy Director of the Institute for Research of the Portuguese Speaking Countries and Coordinator of the Doctorate Programme. His research interests are International Relations, International Law and China Studies. 

 

MANUEL FÉLIX RIBEIRO 

Advisor of the Board of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Invited Fellow of the Portuguese Institute for International Relations, IPRI – Nova Lisbon University. He is also Vice-President of the Supervisory Board of the Club of Lisbon. 

 

LINO SANTOS 

Deputy Director-General of the National Security Office of Portugal, and General Coordinator of the National Cybersecurity Centre in the country. Lino Santos is also the designated Portuguese Representative at the Board of Management of the European Cybersecurity Agency. 

 

Luís AmadoLUÍS AMADO 

International Consultant. Invited Full Professor at the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP) of the University of Lisbon. Former Portuguese Minister of Defence (2005-2006) and Minister of State and Foreign Affairs (2006-2011) 

 

LUÍS TOMÉ 

Full Professor of the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, Director of the Department of International Relations and Scientific Coordinator of OBSERVARE. Visiting Professor at Sapienza-Universitá in Rome and of the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara. 

 

PAULO MANUEL VALLE-FLÔR TELLES DE FREITAS 

Chairman of the Instituto Marquês de Valle Flôr (IMVF) and intensive care Physician at Fernando da Fonseca Hospital. Member of the Board of the Portuguese Group of Triage. Former Invited Professor in on Medical Emergency at the Manchester Metropolitan University.  

 

PAULO SANDE

Lawyer at Cruz Vilaça Advogados. Master in Political Science and International Relations, post-graduate in EU Law from the Catholic University. Head of the European Parliament Cabinet in Lisbon (2004-2012), he was Political Consultant of the President of Portugal (2016–2021).

 

PEDRO SALEIRO 

Director of AI Research at Feedzai a Fraud and AML Machine Learning Platform Company. He worked on open source tools and data science in diverse areas, from criminal justice to health care. He co-founded the Aequitas Platform, a tool to audit and detect AI malpractices. 

 

RITA PATROCÍNIO DE JESUS 

Specialist Physician in Infectious Diseases at Fernando da Fonseca Hospital. MSc in Tropical Medicine with a International Health Qualification in East African (DTM&H) diseases at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
