7 APR | SEXRWA Webinar: The politics of research on sex
The second webinar in the context of the research project “Sexual and Reproductive Rights in West Africa and gendered cultural resistance” will take place on 7 April (6PM GMT) with guest Ellen Foley (Clark University).
Title: The politics of research on sex: reflections and lessons learned from two decades of field work in Senegal
In this talk Dr. Ellen Foley will reflect on how gendered rights and obligations are negotiated in a variety of social settings in Senegal. Likewise, she will explore the debates, stakes, and changing nature of gendered conflicts in rural and urban Senegal from several vantage points: multi-generational polygynous households, programs aimed at empowering adolescent girls, support services for registered sex workers, and the promotion of contraceptives as a cornerstone of girls and women’s empowerment. She will argue that the production of anthropological knowledge on sexuality and reproduction reflects a complex convergence of the interests of the ethnographer, shifting theoretical debates in the anthropological literature, and changing priorities in the broad field of gender and development.
This is second webinar in this series which will focus in Senegal and Guinea Bissau.
