Erkki Tuomioja e os “Historiadores Sem Fronteiras”
No final de dezembro, Erkki Tuomioja, antigo Ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros Finlandês, esteve no ISCTE a convite do CEI-IUL para apresentar a associação Historians Without Borders, que procura salientar os contributos de Historiadores para a resolução de problemas internacionais.
Nesta ocasião, Erkki Tuomioja fez uma apresentação intitulada “O que poderão os Historiadores fazer para evitar os abusos da História”, durante a qual procurou exemplificar vários episódios em que o trabalho da associação pode ser particularmente útil. A principal preocupação desta associação é preservar o legado histórico tal como ele existe, evitando que haja uma apropriação da verdade histórica por qualquer poder político instituído – evitando que a História se transforme em lei. Outra grande preocupação da Historians Without Borders é garantir que há liberdade de investigação, quer em termos da escolha dos temas a investigar, quer no que toca ao acesso aos arquivos.
Recordamos aqui algumas das palavras proferidas por Erkki Tuomioja:
We are living in increasingly ahistorical times, by which I mean that peoples awareness and understanding of from where and how we have arrived at where we are today is diminishing rather than increasing. One consequence of this ignorance is that it also makes it more difficult to see into the future and shape it, fostering what is sometimes described as postmodern here-and-now short-termism.
To assert that those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it may or may not be true, but ignorance will always increase the risk of being made an unconscious prisoner of history and prey to the machinations of politicians seeking to exploit history for their own ends.
As historians we must actively contribute to removing history as an instrument to foster conflicts and hamper efforts at conflict resolution, and we must try and use it as a means for creating more common understanding and enhancing conflict prevention.
