27 SEP – 1 OCT | Summer School Global Challenges
Global Challenges is a policy-oriented Summer School on the current challenges that shape and reconfigure the architecture of the global system.
This is an initiative organised and promoted by CEI-Iscte, in partnership with IMVF and the Club of Lisbon.
Summary
The Global Challenges Summer School (visit the site) is a 20-hours course, from 27 September to 1 October 2021, with 2 daily classes, from 18h00 to 20h00 and from 20h30 to 22h30. It is set to be an on-site course at Iscte (Lisbon), with the possibility of on-line participation, subject to registration. It works as an optional course for Iscte’s master students, but it is also open as a summer school, or specialization seminar.
Coordination
Academic coordinator: Luís Nuno Rodrigues, director of the Master’s in International Studies, director of the CEI-Iscte, the Center for International Studies of Iscte – Lisbon University Institute.
Executive coordinator: Fernando Jorge Cardoso, integrated researcher of CEI-Iscte, head of Strategic and Development Studies of IMVF, executive director of the Club of Lisbon.
Applications as a specialisation seminar
The Summer School is open to any candidate – CV and letter of intention are needed. Those who assist 80% of the classes will receive a Certificate of Participation. Find out more about the application here.
Enrolment and fees
- As an optional UC of the Iscte master’s in International Studies
- for Iscte students enrolled in the master’s degree: no fee as they are choosing it within the scope of their study plan.
- As a Specialization Seminar for other participants:
- for Iscte students with active enrolment in another programme: 50 EUR (+ 25 EUR application fee + 10 EUR enrolment fee).
- for Erasmus students: no fees.
- for other international students’: fees dependent upon applicable regimes.
- for the general public, outside Iscte: 100 EUR (+ 25 EUR application fee + 10 EUR registration fee).

Speakers’ Bios
LUÍS AMADO
Luís Amado is Chairman of the General and Supervision Board of EDP, the Portuguese Electric Power Company. He was a member of the Portuguese Government and served among other posts as Minister of State and Foreign Affairs. He is an expert in the analysis of geopolitics’ realities and trends.
NUNO ANTUNES
Nuno Antunes is a Partner of Miranda & Associados. He is an expert in law of the sea, and currently integrates the arbitrators’ list of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). His professional work relates mainly with oil and gas. He is an expert in the study of energy transition.
FERNANDO JORGE CARDOSO
Fernando Jorge Cardoso is executive coordinator of the Summer School Global Challenges. He is Head of Strategic and Development Studies of IMVF, Executive Director of the Club of Lisbon and also an Integrated Researcher at CEI-Iscte. He is an expert in development and African studies.
CLARA CARVALHO
Clara Carvalho is Assistant Professor at Iscte and Vice-President of the General Assembly of the Club of Lisbon. She was President of AEGIS, the major European Platfomr on Europe-Africa studies. Until May 2016 she was the first Chair of the CEI-Iscte. She is an expert in African studies and health global threats.
CÁTIA MIRIAM COSTA
Cátia Miriam Costa is currently advisor to the Secretary of State of Internationalization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal and an Integrated Researcher at the CEI-Iscte. She is an expert on intercultural studies and in the analysis of Asian, China issues.
FRANCISCO SEIXAS DA COSTA
Francisco Seixas da Costa is chairman of the Club of Lisbon. He is a consultant and business manager. He was Portuguese Ambassador to the UN, OSCE, UNESCO, Brazil and France. He served as Secretary of State for European Affairs and as executive director of the North-South Centre. He is an expert in European affairs.
GIULIA DANIELE
Giulia Daniele is Research Fellow at CEI-Iscte and Visiting Research Fellow at the (CMRB) of the University of East London. Within her main research interests are social movements, gender studies, conflict resolution and ethno-national narratives. She is an expert in Middle East studies.
CARMEN FONSECA
Carmen Fonseca is a Researcher and Member of the Executive Council of IPRI-NOVA. She is Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Studies of the Scholl of Social Sciences of the Nova University. She is Editor in Chief of Relações Internacionais. Carmen is an expert in Latin America studies.
PAULO MANUEL VALLE-FLÔR TELLES DE FREITAS
Paulo Telles de Freitas is Chairman of the Instituto Marquês de Valle Flôr and Chief of Intensive Care at Fernando da Fonseca Hospital. He is Member of the Board of the Portuguese Society of Intensive Care and of the Order of Phisycians College of Medical Emergency Competence in Intensive Care.
RAQUEL FREITAS
Raquel Freitas is a Researcher at CEI-Iscte. She has worked extensively in the areas of Humanitarian Action, Development Aid, International Relations, Political Science, Political Economy and Culture Politics. Raquel is an expert on migration studies, with a particular focus on refugees.
RITA PATROCÍNIO DE JESUS
Rita de Jesus is a Specialist Registrar in Infectious Diseases at Fernando da Fonseca Hospital. She is Teaching Assistant in Infectious Diseases and attended several short courses and workshops in Infectious Diseases and Antibiotics, HIV, Hepatology, TB and Emergency Medicine.
ANDRÉS MALAMUD
Andrés Malamud is a senior research fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. He served in the executive committee of the Latin American Political Science Association. He was secretary-general of the Portuguese Association of Political Science. He is an expert in Latin America Studies.
MARCELO MORICONI
Marcelo Moriconi is an Integrated Researcher at CEI-Iscte. He was a Visiting Researcher at the London School of Economics and a Researcher at the Universidade Autónoma Metropolitana in México. He is an analyst on the relationship between football and politics and an expert in Latin America studies.
CATARINA ROSETA PALMA
Catarina Roseta Palma is Assistant Professor at Iscte. Her main research interests and activities are related with environmental and natural resource economics, especially in the areas of water management, behavioural models, uncertainty, and growth. She is an expert in environment economics.
JAIME NOGUEIRA PINTO
Jaime Nogueira Pinto is Member of the Board and shareholder of Business Intelligence, Strategic Counseling. He is a Conferencist at IDN and IUM in Portugal and at the Higher Institute of Military Education in Angola. He is an expert in geopolitics, defense and security and European affairs.
ANA SANTOS PINTO
Ana Santos Pinto is Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Studies at the NOVA Lisbon University, where she is also Researcher at IPRI. She is Member of the Luso-American Foundation Council of Curators. She served for 2 years as Secretary of State of National Defense. She is an expert in Middle East geopolitics.
NOÉMIA PIZARRO
Noémia Pizarro was recently nominated Adjunct at the Cabinet of the Minister of National Defense of Portugal. She is also a Researcher and a former member of the staff of CEI-Iscte. She is an expert in defense and security studies, with a particular focus in migration affairs.
BRUNO CARDOSO REIS
Bruno Cardoso Reis was recently nominated as a Qualified Expert at the Cabinet of the Minister of National Defense of Portugal. He is a Professor at Iscte and a Member of the Board and Vice-President of CEI-Iscte. He is an expert in peace and war studies, with a particular focus on the new wars.
JOSÉ MANUEL FÉLIX RIBEIRO
Félix Ribeiro is Advisor of the Board of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Invited Fellow of the Portuguese Institute for International Relations, IPRI-UNL. He is also Vice-President of the Supervisory Board of the Club of Lisbon. Félix Ribeiro is an expert in Prospective and Planning.
INÊS MARQUES RIBEIRO
Inês Marques Ribeiro is an Integrated Researcher and Science Manager at the CEI-Iscte. Researcher at the National Defense Policy Directorate to support the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the first semester of 2021. She is an expert in Defense and European Studies.
LUÍS NUNO RODRIGUES
Luís Nuno Rodrigues is academic coordinator of Global Challenges and the Director of CEI-Iscte. He is Full Professor at Iscte and coordinates the graduate programme on History, Defense and International Relations. He is also the Editor of the Portuguese Journal of Social Science. He is an expert in the History of the US.
PEDRO SALEIRO
Pedro Saleiro is Data Science Manager at Feedzai. He worked with Rayid Ghani at the Center for Data Science and Public Policy, developing open source tools methodologies. Pedro is a founder of the Aequitas Platform to audit and detect fraud in AI systems. He is an expert in Machine Learning and Information Retrieval.
LINO SANTOS
Lino Santos is Deputy-general Director of the National Security Office of Portugal, and General Coordinator of the National Cybersecurity Centre. He is also the Portuguese Representative at the Board of Management of the European Cybersecurity Agency. He is an expert in Cybersecurity and the Governance of Internet.
